Tor Caldara Regional Nature Reserve

The Tor Caldara regional nature reserve is a protected natural area located in the municipality of Anzio and established in 1988 by legislative provision of the Lazio Region ] .

The territory is almost flat, allowing for pleasant walks, and ends towards the sea above a cliff of about 15 metres. The tower that gives its name to the reserve stands on the highest point of this cliff and had the function of controlling the Lazio coast, between Tor San Lorenzo and Anzio , from the incursions of Saracen pirates.
Inside, the territory is characterized by numerous small sulphurous springs, a thermal residue of a much more intense volcanic activity linked to the volcanic district of the Alban Hills ( Vulcano Laziale ), which here represents its extreme extension to the sea. Sometimes the springs form small bodies of water from which it is possible to observe the gurgling of sulphurous fumes that permeate the air with the characteristic smell of "rotten eggs".
